How to solve an anagram
- Type your letters into the box, up to 15.
- Add ? for a blank tile or unknown letter, up to two.
- Read the full anagrams first, then words grouped by length.
- Filter by word length if you only need, say, five letter words.
How the solver works
The solver checks your letters against a British English word list of about 110,000 words, built from the SCOWL word lists. That means British spellings such as "colour" and "realise" are in. The list downloads once when you first use the tool, and after that results appear instantly as you type.
Full anagrams, which use every one of your letters, are shown first. Below them, every shorter word is grouped by length, longest first, because longer words are usually what you are after. Each letter can only be used as many times as you typed it, so two Es in your letters means up to two Es in a word.
Using blanks and the length filter
Type ? for a letter you do not have yet, such as a blank tile in Scrabble or a gap in a crossword. One ? can stand for any letter, and you can use up to two. Blanks widen the results a lot, so use the length filter to narrow them down: if a crossword answer has seven letters, pick seven and the rest disappear.
For a crossword, type the letters from the anagram clue itself. Clues often signal an anagram with words like "mixed", "broken" or "confused" next to the letters to rearrange.
Countdown, Scrabble and word games
- Countdown letters round: type your nine letters and the longest words appear at the top, ready to check against your own answer
- Scrabble: type your rack and use ? for blank tiles; look for seven letter words that use every tile
- Words with Friends and similar apps: find longer plays from the same rack
- Quizzes and puzzle books: unscramble jumbled words and anagram rounds
Bear in mind that different games use different official word lists, so a word found here may not be allowed in every game, and the odd game-only word may be missing. For Countdown practice, try to find your own answer before you look.
