How to make an X header the right size
- Choose the photo or design for your header.
- Move the box, keeping words inside the dashed safe area.
- Download it at 1500 x 500.
- On X, choose Edit profile and change the header.
X header and profile photo sizes
- Header: 1500 x 500 pixels, JPG, PNG or a still GIF.
- Profile photo: 400 x 400 pixels, shown as a circle.
- Animated GIFs are not allowed for either.
Saving at exactly 1500 x 500 means X does not crop your image in ways you did not choose.
What gets hidden, and where to put things
X shows your header at different heights on different screens, trimming up to 60 pixels from the top and bottom. Your round profile photo also sits over the bottom left, and on phones the header is shown much smaller.

Making a header from a normal photo
A 3:1 header is much wider than a phone photo, so a lot of the height is cut. Pick a landscape photo with the subject across the middle, then move the box until it sits inside the safe area. If your photo is smaller than 1500 pixels wide it will be enlarged, and this tool tells you when it may look soft. A wide sky, a landscape or a plain brand colour all work well.
