How to test your microphone
- Press Start and allow microphone access when your browser asks.
- Speak normally and watch the level meter move.
- Choose a different microphone from the list if you have more than one.
- Record 5 seconds and play it back to check how you sound.
Reading the level meter
The meter shows how loud the sound reaching your microphone is, and the peak marker holds the loudest point for a moment. When you talk at a normal volume, the bar should move well into the middle of the meter. If it barely flickers, your mic is too quiet or too far away. If it hits the top every time you speak, it is too loud and may sound distorted on calls.
Recording 5 seconds and playing it back is the best check of all. Listen for hiss, echo, a muffled sound or background noise such as a fan or the washing machine. Your audio is processed on your device and is never uploaded or kept.
Microphone not working? Try these
- Browser permission: click the padlock or settings icon next to the web address and set Microphone to Allow, then reload
- Wrong input: pick the right mic from the list; laptops often default to the built-in mic even with a headset plugged in
- Windows: open Settings, then System, then Sound, and check the input device and its volume; also check Privacy and security, then Microphone, is switched on
- Mac: open System Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Microphone, and allow your browser; check the input in Sound settings
- Another app: Zoom, Teams, Discord or a game can hold on to the mic, so close them and try again
- Bluetooth headsets: many switch to a lower quality mode when the mic is in use; make sure the headset is chosen as the input, not only the output
- Hardware: look for a mute switch on the headset cable or a mute key on the laptop
Before an important call
Run the test a few minutes before a job interview, a GP video appointment or a Teams meeting, using the same mic you will use on the call. If your voice sounds thin, move the mic closer; around a hand's width from your mouth suits most headsets. If there is an echo, wear headphones so your speakers do not feed back into the mic.
Questions people ask
Is my audio recorded or uploaded?
No. The meter and the 5 second recording work on your device only. Nothing is sent to us or saved.
Why does nothing happen when I speak?
Check the browser permission via the padlock icon, choose the right mic from the list and make sure no other app is using it.
How do I pick a different microphone?
After you press Start, choose it from the microphone list. The names come from your computer or phone.
Why does my Bluetooth headset sound worse on calls?
Many Bluetooth headsets drop to a lower quality mode when their microphone is in use. A wired headset or USB mic usually sounds clearer.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in most modern mobile browsers. Allow microphone access when asked.
