How to make a Facebook cover photo fit

  1. Choose the photo for your cover.
  2. Move the box, keeping faces and words inside the dashed band.
  3. Download it at 1640 x 924.
  4. On Facebook, choose Edit cover photo and upload it.

Why cover photos get cut off

Facebook uses the same cover photo on every device but crops it differently. On a computer it appears as a wide, thin strip, roughly 820 x 312. On a phone it shows taller and narrower, roughly 640 x 360, so the sides are trimmed. A photo made for one looks wrong on the other.

Saving at 1640 x 924 with your subject in the middle band solves this: phones show the whole image, and computers show the band this tool marks with a dashed box.

Facebook's own rules and tips

  • Minimum: 400 x 150 pixels. Anything smaller is rejected.
  • Fastest to load: an sRGB JPG under 100 KB. Big photos are compressed by Facebook anyway.
  • Logos and text: a PNG keeps edges crisp.
  • Profile picture: shown as a circle over the bottom left of the cover. Upload a square, at least 320 x 320; 720 x 720 looks sharp.

Keep the bottom left of the cover free of detail, because your profile picture sits over it. Your photo is cropped on your device and never uploaded here.

Choosing a cover photo that crops well

Wide photos with the subject in the middle crop best, such as a team photo, a view or your shop front. Avoid putting faces near the left edge, where the profile picture sits, or near the top and bottom, which computers trim. If your photo is smaller than 1640 pixels wide this tool enlarges it and warns you it may look soft; a full size phone photo is always large enough.
